USDA Requires Nutrition Facts on 40 Meat and Poultry Products
|
On December 9th, 2011 the U.S. Department of Agricultural Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS) announced a delay in the effective date from January 1st, 2012 to March 1st, 2012 when it will become mandatory to display nutrition information labels on product packages or at the point of purchase for 40 of the most popular cuts of meat and poultry.¹
Under the rule, packages of ground or chopped meat and poultry will be required to display nutrition facts on the packages including the number of calories, the grams of total fat and saturated fat. Additionally single ingredient items of whole, raw cuts of the most popular meats and poultry items will be required to either state the nutrition facts on the packages or make the nutrition information visible to consumers at the point of purchase.²
Furthermore this rulemaking will require that an item which states the percentage of lean meat on its label will also be required to list the percentage of fat with the lean statement. No major changes were made in this rule. Please view Safeguard 016/11 dated January 2011 for additional information.
