Canadian authorities are seeking comments by 6 August on a proposal that would lower the maximum leachable level for lead under the hazardous product regulations for kettles from 0.05 parts per million to 0.01 ppm. The kettle regulations apply to a wide range of products, including both stove-top and electric makes of kettles, coffee percolators, samovars and espresso machines. The leachable lead is generally found within materials of poor quality used in the construction of the kettle, such as in the vessel walls or in the soldering used to fuse parts of the kettle together. Health Canada notes that the proposed amendment is expected to have a low impact on most businesses, given that manufacturers and importers demonstrated a 88.9 percent compliance level with the proposed lead limit during fiscal year 2006-2007. Test results also showed a 100 percent compliance level with the current 0.05 ppm limit. These high compliance levels are attributable to the widespread adoption of safer construction methods for kettles, including the use of non-lead solder.
