Dorothy Lam set up Green Bean with business partner Teresa Woo last year. The company specialises in children's clothing, featuring simple but bright, eye-catching designs. From exquisite Turkish cotton to bold Italian dyes, its colourful T-shirts, shorts, sweatshirts and accessories are all made from organic fabric. The two mothers decided to set up the eco-friendly children's apparel business to help improve the environment. Its products were part of "Green World Exhibition," held earlier this month at the HKTDC Design Gallery.
What's your assessment of the current state of Hong Kong's creative industry?
More and more people are discovering local brands. I think that Hong Kong has a lot to offer in terms of local design and products, despite being relatively young in comparison to many international markets, including Europe. But at the same time, I think Hong Kong's creative industry needs a boost. It's hindered because the government isn't putting enough emphasis to help Hong Kong's creative industry develop more rapidly.
What can budding designers expect as they venture out in this economic downturn and what advice would you offer?
You have to be passionate about what you do, not be impulsive. There will be times where you'll run into problems. Many things can be problematic for start-ups, such as how best to market your product or dealing with finances. Marketing a product means staying focused on your consumer's needs and wants. And when in doubt, don't be afraid to ask for advice.
Why do you think there's a big demand now for eco-products, and do you think that the demand is here to stay?
Eco-products seem all the rage these days. To be a part of that – even if it's a small part – is something I'm very proud of. Smart consumers choose eco-products because they realise environmental conditions are slowly worsening around the world, and they want to do something to make a change. I think that demand will gradually increase over time. As the world population increases, there will be a higher carbon footprint, and this is something we need to work on, so we can lessen our toll on the environment.
How will eco-design exhibits, such as the one at the HKTDC Design Gallery, help raise environmental awareness?
Eco-design exhibits are great for raising awareness because they bring together designers with new and exciting ideas. We share a common goal: to promote an environmentally friendly future. The products on exhibit attract large crowds, and I'm pleased to see so many international visitors as well.
How does Green Bean stand out from other designer brands?
I think our brand image is unique, and that's what makes our products stand out. Not only do we care for the environment through eco-design, we want to spread our message far and wide. Every piece of clothing we make carries a message; it's simple, but effective. We make children's clothes because we firmly believe in our children. We think they will be the ones who will be able to make the greatest change for a greener environment.
What does the future hold for Green Bean?
It's still early and we're still planning, but we may introduce different types of clothing and accessories. We are considering adding denim jeans to our collection, possibly making clothing for mums as well, so mum and baby can show off their special bond in style. We will hold fast to our commitment of using organic materials.
A small decision makes a big difference. If everybody contributes, we can change the world for a greener future.
