First organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) in 1990, the fair has grown into a top destination event, as well as a favourite summertime attraction for families and students. 

"The publishing industry plays a crucial role in Hong Kong's creative economy. Thanks to the great support from publishers, writers and book lovers, the Hong Kong Book Fair has grown bigger and bigger over the past two decades," said Raymond Yip, Assistant Executive Director of the HKTDC. 

For the first time, Brazil, Italy and the United Arab Emirates are sending exhibitors to the fair, which features one-third more exhibition space than in 2008. New zones include Multimedia, featuring ebooks, online publishing, audio-visual learning aids and educational software, and English Avenue, with more than 50 booths. Other zones will focus on books related to the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, teenagers, children and religion. 

The International Cultural Village returns, providing a forum for international publishers and groups from 10 countries and regions: Bangladesh, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, India, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and the UAE. 

"To celebrate the 20^th edition of the book fair, more than 200 cultural events have been arranged this year, from "Learning English through Sharing Books" seminars organised by the British Council, to storytelling sessions led by local celebrities," said Mr Yip. 

Together with Yazhou Zhoukan, the HKTDC will also continue the popular Renowned Writers Series of seminars featuring well-known authors from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and Taiwan. On 24 July, Howard Goldblatt, University of Notre Dame Research Professor of Chinese, and among the foremost translators of contemporary Chinese literature in the West, will take part in a seminar organised with the Hong Kong Art Development Council. 

"We will also enhance copyright trade by organising the first Hong Kong Publishing Copyright Fair, which will run concurrently with the book fair," said Mr Yip.

- Super Pass: HK$80; available at HKTDC Design Gallery (Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre outlet only), bookstores and publishing houses; exact locations to be advised. With the Super Pass, visitors have unlimited entry to the book fair and can use the special access to avoid queuing.
