PCCW Limited

Company Background

After the acquisition of Cable & Wireless HKT in August 2000, PCCW Limited (PCCW) was officially established in Hong Kong. PCCW is now Hong Kong's premier telecommunications provider and a world-class player in information and communication technologies. PCCW is also the holding company of HKT Group Holdings Limited (HKT), which was formed in 2008 to hold the telecommunications services, media and IT solutions businesses of the PCCW Group in a reorganization that aimed to improve operational efficiencies of the group.

PCCW currently employs 16,200 staff. The group is headquartered in Hong Kong and maintains a presence in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the Americas, mainland China and other parts of Asia. The major services PCCW currently provides include: fixed line and mobile telephone, Internet Protocol TV (IPTV), Internet access, ICT solutions, Internet data and contact centers, and global communications and infrastructure services.

PCCW/HKT is the only operator in Hong Kong to offer a genuine quadruple-play experience to customers, consisting of fixed-line, broadband Internet, mobile and TV. With innovation and quality, the group has successfully built its unique quadruple-play capability and strengthened its leadership of a consumer market ready to embrace new technology and content. Customers can now tailor their own lifestyle according to personal preference and schedule. Whether they are in the home or on the move, customers are able to enjoy unprecedented convenience made possible by our value-added services.

In recent years, PCCW has made the transition from a traditional telecoms operator to a next-generation provider of media content, applications and transactional services. The company's IPTV service, "now TV," reaches more than 35 percent of the estimated 2.3 million households in Hong Kong. In addition, the group meets the sophisticated needs of the international business community while supporting network operators with cutting-edge technical services and handling large-scale IT outsourcing projects for public and private sector organizations.

Awards

PCCW has been a major award winner at the "Hong Kong ICT Awards," which recognize, promote, and commend the excellent achievements to which Hong Kong ICT professionals and organizations contribute. The awards also encourage local practitioners to develop innovative and creative ICT solutions, enhancing the image of the ICT sector in Hong Kong.

This year, the group won three major awards at the "Best Ubiquitous Networking Awards," organized by the Hong Kong Wireless Technology Industry Association (WTIA). The objectives of WTIA are to represent and safeguard the interests and opinions of the wireless technology industry to the government and other international parties; promote the development, usage and awareness of wireless technology applications in Hong Kong; enhance communication and partnership between different types of companies in the wireless technology industry; and advance the professional standards of software and hardware development in wireless technology applications.

HDTV on Mobile

PCCW's "HDTV on Mobile" won the "2008 Best Ubiquitous Networking (Mobile Infotainment Application) Gold Award. PCCW delivers the greatest variety and largest number of high-definition live TV broadcasts to Hong Kong handsets through the "HDTV on Mobile" platform. There are a total of 28 HD channels of local and international content, 19 of which feature live TV broadcasts. A wide range of entertaining and informative programming includes the most up-to-date news, comprehensive financial updates, hot music, world class sports coverage and trendy lifestyle content. The high quality "HDTV on Mobile" service is available 24 hours a day through PCCW's innovative 3G/HSDPA networks.

PCCW's WiFi

PCCW was also the winner of the "Certificate of Merit (Outstanding WiFi Solution)." PCCW has built the strongest local HD on mobile platform by harnessing the broadcasting power of more than 5,000 PCCW WiFi hotspots throughout Hong Kong.

PCCW's quadruple-play capability enables it to exclusively provide the most popular infotainment in high video-streaming quality. This means that the media content services are made available via a choice of four customer delivery platforms: fixed-line, broadband Internet, mobile and TV. Content includes Barclays Premier League coverage, MOOV LIVE music shows and now TV-produced news channels, now NEWs and now BNC.

PCCW NextGen Network

In addition, PCCW also won the "Certificate of Merit (Outstanding 3G Solution)" of the "Best Ubiquitous Networking Award." The award is to recognize PCCW mobile's philosophy of continuous improvement. PCCW's state-of-the-art Next Generation Network (PCCW NextGen) has been designed to boost transmission speeds of land-based 3G mobile traffic. The network allows PCCW to adopt the latest HSPA+ mobile technology to triple the current maximum download speed of 7.2Mbps to 21Mbps, enabling customers to enjoy the "beyond-3G" mobile internet experience.

Future Development

PCCW Global provides integrated global communications solutions, runs a fully-meshed IP, fiber and satellite network and serves the voice, data and multimedia needs of multinational enterprises. It serves the enterprise and wholesale markets from its presence in Europe, the Americas, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. PCCW Global's resilient network currently provides connectivity in more than 1,000 cities and 80 countries. The PCCW international business unit will combine the marketing expertise of the company with technology, media and enterprise service to offer end-to-end solutions to operators and governments in other parts of the world.

In the consumer market, PCCW seeks to maintain its fixed-line customer base, while introducing more value-added features to the PCCW "eye" home multimedia service. Meanwhile, increasing demand in the commercial sector for higher bandwidth and managed services looks set to further drive growth in broadband, local data and international telecommunications services. The company's broadband service will focus on higher access speeds and versatile wireless solutions.

PCCW mobile's 3G service has strengthened its market position due to the high quality of service, network coverage, and quadruple-play delivery of media content. The company is also planning to enhance the mobile position with more value-added services and features.

In addition, now TV has become the largest local pay-TV operator, offering vast variety of largely exclusive content and more high-definition channels to appeal to a wider audience.
