Introduction
Located in the South-East of Heilongjiang, Suifenhe lies in the centre of the North-East Asian economic circle. It is adjacent to the developed shore area of Far East of Russia, and is connected to Russia by one railroad and two highways. It is also currently the largest land-way trade port of China to the Sea of Japan.
The average temperature in Suifenhe is 5 Celsius, higher than its surrounding areas. The rainfall is concentrated from June to September.
Economic Features
Suifenhe's economy is mainly based on foreign trade. In 2007, the total imports and exports reached US$4.6 billion, up 24.9% over 2006. The major trading partner is Russia, accounting for 82.5% of total foreign trade. A large portion of the trade was small trade on the border, which accounted for 42.3% of the total.
Major export products included garments, machinery and electrical products, footwear, high-tech products, agricultural products, textiles and yarn. Major import products were timber, crude oil, fertilizer, paper pulp, refined oil, iron ore and synthetic rubber.
Cultural Highlights
In the 19th century, the Middle-East Railway made its way into China through Suifenhe Valley. A station was built where modern Suifenhe is located, and was then developed into a small town.
After the launch of the railway, embassies from different countries gathered in this town, and together with merchants, brought goods, culture and architectural style from Europe. It was called “Town of Flag” at the time because there were national flags of 18 countries flying over the town.
Tourist Attractions
Suifenhe is a good place for tourists due to its beautiful scenery featuring ice and snow in winter. The city has many historical sites, European-style architecture and archaized buildings. Famous ones include the Skee Field in forest park, the Great White Building and the Orthodox Church.
The food in Suifenhe includes Chinese and Korean cuisine, such as lamb hotpot, fish feast, gluten cake, stewed pork with bean noodle, chicken stewed with mushrooms, Korean noodles, and stewed dog meat.
