Introduction
Located in the southeast of Heilongjiang Province, Mudanjiang borders Jilin Province to the south, neighbors Russia to the East and is adjacent to the Sea of Japan.
Mudanjiang has a temperate continental monsoon climate, with four distinct seasons and an average temperature of 4.5 Celsius. Its weather is cool and rarely windy in spring and autumn.
Economic Features
In 2007, the value-added industrial output of Mudanjiang reached RMB 5.4 billon, up 19.4% over 2006. Its pillar industries include the forest industry, accessory industry for automobiles, paper making, petrochemicals, new materials, medicine and energy.
The foreign trade value grew by 23.3% to reach US$7.6 billion in 2007. Mudanjiang has become the top city in Heilongjiang in terms of trade value with Russia. Its foreign trade value accounted for 44.2% of the province's total.
There were 28 foreign investment projects approved in 2007, with a total investment of US$300.1 million - growing by 95.9% year on year.
Cultural Highlights
Mudanjiang was the resident area of the Manchu people 2,300 years ago. In 1903, Russia built a train station for the Middle-East Railway in Mudanjiang, thus boosting local development.
Presently, cultural intercommunication activities are held each year between Mudanjiang and countries like Russia and South Korea.
Tourist Attractions
The most famous scenic spot in Mudanjiang is Jingbo Lake, which is the only lava-dammed lake caused by volcanic eruption in China. Other sites include the National Forest Park and the Skee Field by Mudan Mountain, and the Breeding Center for the Siberian Tiger.
Besides hazel mushrooms and venison, the best local dishes also include lamb hotpot, fish feast and gluten cake. Most of them are derived from Dongbei or Korean culinary styles. The stewed dishes and the fish feast are among the most famous delights.
