Tongren Region is located in the northeastern part of Guizhou Province. It covers an area of 18,003 sq km. Its population is 366,918.
Tongren has a typical plateau subtropical humid monsoon climate with plenty of rain, and four distinct seasons. The average temperature is 16-17°C, while the average annual precipitation totals 1,250-1,400 mm.
Tongren is replete with mineral resources such as coal, mercury, manganese, lead, zinc, potassium shale, barite and marble. Reserves and outputs of mercury rank first throughout China, while proven reserves of manganese amount to 60 million tons, contributing one eighth of the country's total. In addition, Tongren is also rich is water resources. Theoretical hydro-energy reserves total 2.0 million kw.
Tongren has convenient transportation. The Xiangfan-Guiding Railway, the Chongqing-Huaihua Railway and the Yuping-Tongren Highway run through the city. Daxing Airport, 21 km from Tongren’s downtown area, operates scheduled flights to major cities including Guiyang, Changsha, Chongqing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Additionally, using Wujiang River waterway, three-hundred ton ships are able to sail directly to Shanghai.

Tongren realized GDP of RMB 3.5 billion in 2007, representing a rise of 15.0% year on year. The city's GDP accounted for approximately 1.3% of Guizhou's total and ranked last out of the nine prefecture-level divisions in the province.
The agricultural sector generated value-added output of RMB 694 million in 2007, accounting for 20.0% of the city's GDP. Secondary industry (industry and construction) realized value-added industrial output of RMB 1.3 billion, accounting for 36.3% of the city's total.
The industrial sector realized value-added industrial output of RMB 925 million, up 17.2% year on year, while value-added industrial output of industrial enterprises with designated size or above increased by 19.0% to RMB 858 million, contributing 92.8% to the industrial sector's total.
Electricity, ferroalloy, tobacco and industrial silicon are the major industrial products of the city. Their outputs amount to 71.8 million kWh of electricity, 37,713 tons of ferroalloy, 535,000 units of tobacco and 12,970 tons of industrial silicon, up 177.8%, 0.6%, 0% and down 22.7% year on year, respectively.
The service sector, the largest contributor to Tongren’s economy, generated value-added output of RMB 1.5 billion in 2007, accounting for 43.7% of the city's total GDP. Retail, accommodation, catering and tourism are important pillars of the sector. Sales revenue of retail, accommodation and catering totaled RMB 1.1 billion in 2007, contributing 91.8% to the service sector’s total.
During 2007, 623,500 tourists visited the city, up 20.8% year on year, while tourism income totaled RMB 200 million, representing a rise of 45.6% compared to the previous year.

Tongren Region is a multi-cultural city with many ethnic minority groups, including the Han, the Tujia, the Miao, the Gelao, and the Dong. They live together harmoniously and retain their cultural legacy and life practices.
Tongren is famous for Nuo Opera, which is well-known as the living fossil of Chinese Opera. Unique breathtaking and wonderful performances such as the 'Climbing the Blade', can be seen at the Nuo Opera. The 'Nuo Mask' and other items used in Nuo Opera are on display at the China Nuo Opera and Nuo Mask Museum

Tongren is rich in beautiful natural and cultural tourism resources including the Nine-dragon Cave Scenic Spot (famous for karst caves), Mt. Fanjingshan National Nature Reserve, and the beautiful Jinjiang River, Dongshan Temple, China Nuo Opera and Nuo Mask Museum.
When it comes to local snacks, Tongren Shefan, which is made with vegetables, glutinous rice, rice, wild onions and bacon, is really delicious and healthy. In addition, dry bean-curd, pearl peanuts and Youcha, which is a spicy refreshing Tea, can be good choices for tourists.
