Introduction
 
Zunyi is located in the northern part of Guizhou Province, in the northeastern part of Yungui Plateau. It is the biggest of Guizhou's nine prefecture-level divisions, and covers 30,762 sq km, 17.5% of province's total area. Its population was 7.56 million in 2009.

This prefecture-level city played an important role in the revolutionary history of China. In 1935, Mao Zedong was first elected to the leadership of the Communist Party of China during the Long March at the Zunyi Meeting.  

Zunyi has a middle-subtropical, humid monsoon climate with plenty of rain, and no extremely hot summer or bitter cold winter. The average temperature is 15.1°C, while the average annual precipitation totals 1,000-1,300 mm.

Zunyi is rich in natural resources. Forests cover 32.5% of the city's lands. Average annual runoff of the surface water amounts to 17.9 billion steres, accounting for approximately 17% of the province's total. In addition, Zunyi is replete with mineral resources such as manganese, pyrite, silica, nickel, molybdenum and barium. Proven reserves of manganese and coal amount to 50 billion tons and 6.6 billion tons, ranking first and third in Guizhou, respectively. Additionally, Zunyi is widely appraised as the Northern Barn of Guizhou, since grain production of the city contributed approximately one fourth of the province's total.

Zunyi is one of the transportation hub cities in Northern Guizhou. The Zuiyi-Guiyang Expressway and Chengdu-Guiyang Railway run through the city.
 
Economic Features
 
Zunyi realized GDP of RMB 90.87 billion in 2010, representing a rise of 14.7% year on year. The city's GDP accounted for approximately 25% of Guizhou's total and ranked second after Guiyang, the capital city of the province.

The agricultural sector generated value-added output of RMB 14 billion in 2010, accounting for 15.4% of the city's GDP. Secondary industry (industry and construction), the largest contributor to the city's economy, realized value-added industrial output of RMB 36.78 billion, accounting for 40.5% of the city's total.

The industrial sector realized value-added industrial output of RMB 32.18 billion in 2010, up 18.8% year on year, while value-added industrial output of industrial enterprises with designated size or above level increased by 18.9% to RMB 31.35 billion, contributing 97% to the industrial sector's total. Heavy and light industrial enterprises with designated size or above realized value-added industrial output of RMB 10.62 billion and RMB 20.73 billion, contributing 33% and 64% respectively to the total.

Metallurgy, tobacco and brewing are the pillar industries of the city. In 2009, the three major industries realized value-added industrial output of RMB 15.1 billion in total, accounting for 59.8% of the city's total from enterprises with designated size and above.

Kweichow Moutai<600519>, the most famous liquor producer in China, is based in Renhuai, a county-level city under the administration of Zunyi. Maotai Liquor is as famous as Usquebaugh of Scotland and Aquavit of France. The three are renowned as the Three Famous Whiskies of the World. In the first half of 2008, Kweichow Moutai realized net profit of approximately RMB 4.3 billion, representing a rise of 13.5% compared to the same period of the previous year. During the same time, sales of the company reached RMB 9.7 billion, up 17.33% year on year.

The service sector generated value-added output of RMB 40billion, accounting for 44.1% of the city's total GDP in 2010. Tourism is the most important pillar of the sector.

During 2010, more than 16.62 million tourists visited the city, up 21% year on year, while tourism income totaled RMB 14 billion, representing a rise of 27.8% compared to the previous year. 

In 2010, the total value of imports and exports amounted to US$201.11 million (comprising export value of US$149.74 million and import value of US$51.37 million), up 5.8% year on year. The city primarily imports is equipment, while export goods include liquor, wire, rope, and machinery. The U.S., France and Germany are important trading partners of the city.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Zunyi boasts a profound revolutionary history and has been regarded as a red sacred place where the Chinese revolution witnessed a historic turning point.

Zunyi was also appraised as a town of famous traditional Chinese liquors. In addition to Maotai, which has been used on official occasions in feasts with foreign state leaders and distinguished guests visiting China, Zunyi is home to approximately 20 well-known Chinese liquors such as Dongjiu Liquor and Xijiu Liquor.
 
Tourist Attraction
 

Zunyi has a lot of waterfalls, luxuriant forests, and wonderful karst landforms. Tourists should visit the Sidonggou waterfalls, Zunyi Meeting Site, Qiaoya Heaven Pool Scenery Area, Bing'an Ancient Town, Louguan Mountain, Yelang Basin, and Wujiang River Scenery Area.

Zunyi Meeting Site, a popular tourist attraction, was given a national AAAA rating, the second highest in China. Louguan Mountain was given an AAA rating.

When it comes to local snacks, Zunyi Tofu Pudding Noodles, originating in the Qing Dynasty and made of Bean-curd, pepper, chicken and pork are really delicious and popular.
