Jiujiang is located in the northern area of Jiangxi province, close to famous landmarks such as Lu Mountain, the Yangtze River (the longest river in China) and Poyang Lake (the largest freshwater lake in China), are all nearby. Jiujiang has two districts, nine counties and one county-level city under its jurisdiction. Covering an area of 18,887 sq km, it had a population of 4.8 million at the end of 2009, of which 2.0 million lived in urban areas.
The city has a convenient transportation system. There are three railway lines meeting there including Beijing-Jiujiang, Wuhan-Jiujiang and Hefei-Jiujiang. Jiujiang port is one of the ten largest ports in Yangtze Valley. Furthermore, two national trunk roads and two expressways pass through the city.

Jiujiang is the third largest economy in Jiangxi province, after Nanchang and Ganzhou. In 2010, its GDP reached RMB 103.2 billion, an increase of 14.3%.
Secondary industry, the main sector in Jiujiang, realized value-added output of RMB 57.97 billion in 2010, contributing 56.2% of the city's economy. The service sector also contributed significantly to the city's economy. It generated value-added output of RMB 35.43 billion, accounting for 34.3% of the city's GDP. The primary sector, with value-added output of RMB 9.8 billion, comprised 9.5% of the city's GDP.
The industrial sector plays an important role in Jiujiang's economic development. In 2010, the value-added industrial output of the industrial sector reached RMB 47.87 billion, a rise of 20% over the year before.
Jiujiang has five pillar industries: metallurgy & building materials, textile and garment industry, petrochemical industry, automobile and shipbuilding. The total value added industrial output of these five industries reached RMB 26.87 billion, an increase of 15.7%, accounting for 74.5% of the city's total.
In 2010, Jiujiang's foreign trade sustained rapid growth with an increase of 155.8%% and reached US$1.82 billion. Export and import value rose 162.3% and 143.7% to US$1.21 billion and US$603 million, respectively. That growth rate was higher than the average rate of Jiangxi province. Major export destinations are the EU, the US, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and India.
The utilized FDI rose 27.8% to US$665million in 2010. The investors come from countries including Taiwan, Hong Kong, the U.S. and the E.U.

| Cultural Highlights |

Jiujiang is an ancient city with more than 2,200 years of history. The name “Jiujiang” means many rivers meet here. During the Qin Dynasty, Jiujiang developed into a town. Since then, Jiujiang has had several different names such as Jiangzhou, Xunyang and Caisang.
Historically, Jiujiang was well known as one of the four largest rice markets and one of the three largest tea markets in China. Along with Nanchang, the capital of Jiangxi, it has been the hub of commerce and transportation in the province.

Besides Lu Mountain, the Yangtze River and Poyang Lake, Jiujiang has more than 400 scenic areas, of which 120 have been developed. In 2001, Jiujiang was recognized as one of “China’s Best Tourist Cities”.
Renowned as a geological park, Lu Mountain is located south of Jiujiang city. It is a 40 minute car journey from the city to Lu Mountain. In 1996, it was approved as part of the world’s cultural landscape by UNESCO.
Another interesting place in Jiujiang is Poyang Lake. Every November, thousands of migratory birds from Siberia, Mongolia, Japan, Korea and Northeast China fly to Poyang Lake for hibernation. It is one of the world’s largest bird protection areas and is often called the second Great Wall by foreigners.
