Introduction
 
Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province, is the center of Yunnan’s politics, economy and culture.

Located in the east of the province, the city enjoys a pleasant low-latitude monsoon climate, without bitter cold weather in winter or extreme heat during the summer.

Kunming is also the transportation hub of Yunnan province. In 2007, Kunming Wujiaba International Airport ranked seventh in terms of both passenger throughput (18.9 million persons) and freight throughput (0.26 million tons) in China. Chengdu-Kunming Railway, Kunming-Nanning Railway and Kunming-Guiyang Railway connect Kunming to neighboring provincial cities. In addition, highways provide passage to locations both inside and outside Yunnan Province, as well as to neighboring countries.

There are 38 universities and colleges for higher education located in Kunming. In 2009, these institutes have 269,900 enrolled students. Important key universities include Yunnan University, Kunming University of Science and Technology, Yunnan Normal University and Kunming Medical University.
 
Economic Features
 
Kunming is the province's largest economy. In 2010, the city realized GDP of RMB 212.03 billion, up 14% year on year. It accounted for approximately 34% of the province's total. Additionally, the city's GDP per capita amounted to RMB 33,550 in the same year.

Kunming's major industries include tobacco, metallurgy, mechanical and electronic integration, and pharmaceuticals. They realized value-added industrial outputs of RMB 18.07 billion, RMB 8.93 billion, RMB 6.9 billion and RMB 2.9 billion, up 15.1%, 25.5%, 14.3% and 16.4% year on year, respectively. As a whole, the value-added industrial output of these pillar industries accounted for 61.4% of the city's total.

The service industry's GDP accounts for 49% of the city's total. Within this industry, tourism has been an important pillar business. In 2010, Kunming attracted 34.71 million domestic tourists, realizing a tourism revenue of RMB 28.48 billion, up 25.8% year on year. Its foreign exchange income amounted to US$243 million, up 11.5% over 2009.

Within the same year, Kunming's total foreign trade reached US$10.1 billion, up 79.4% from 2009. The city's main export goods include non-ferrous metals, inorganic chemicals, chemical fertilizer, tobacco and related products, fruit and vegetables, while its key import goods are metal ore, plastics, minerals and natural fertilizers, and industrial equipment. Chile, Vietnam, Myanmar and Laos are important trading partners of the city.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Famous for its pleasant climate, Kunming is nicknamed 'the City of Eternal Spring'. It is the focal point of Yunnan’s minority culture. Some 26 ethnic minorities such as the Yi, Bai, Miao, Dai and Hani live in the city. Each group has its own annual festivals such as the Torch Festival of the Yi people and The Water Splashing Festival (Water Spray Festival), the grandest traditional festival of the Dai culture.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Kunming is a tourist destination as well as Yunnan’s tourism distribution center, connecting Dali, Lijiang River and other tourist cities in the province. Scenic spots such as Dianchi Lake, Stone Forest, the Village of Ethnic Culture and Grand View Pavilion are worth visiting.

In addition, the success of the 1999 Kunming International Horticultural Exposition has attracted people from all over the world. Currently, the Kunming World Horticultural Garden is a must-see scenic spot in the city.

Kunming is also renowned for its many delicious local dishes such as Xuanwei Ham and Across Bridge Rice Noodles, which consist of a bowl of extremely hot chicken broth, slices of up to nine varieties of meat, rice noodles and spices.

By the end of 2010, Kunming had three state-level development zones, namely Kunming Economic & Technological Development Zone, Kunming High-tech Industrial Development Zone and Kunming Dianchi Lake National Holiday Resort.
