Whirlpool enters China's refrigerator market

Whirlpool Corp, the world's largest white home appliance maker, has recently introduced 24 refrigerator models into the Chinese market, the Oriental Morning Post reported on Wednesday.

Whirlpool's refrigerators and washing machines are products with core competitiveness, said a senior official of Whirlpool, adding that the company is well prepared to enter the Chinese market.

The refrigerators, which fall into four product lines, will be produced by a joint venture (JV) with Zhejiang-based Hisense Kelon Electrical<000921>.

In May 2008, Whirlpool and Hisense Kelon invested about RMB 900 million (US$129 million) to set up the JV to produce high-end washing machines and refrigerators for global consumers under the Hisense and Whirlpool brands.

In April, Whirlpool announced its intention to shut down its washing machine manufacturing facility in Shanghai and transfer its washing machine production to the JV to optimize its Chinese operations and cut costs.
