Renault cars banned by China's quality watchdog

China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), the country's quality authority, said on Wednesday that it has halted imports of certain car models manufactured by France's Renault SA due to safety problems, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

AQSIQ banned some car models produced by Renault, namely the Laguna Ph2, Scenic/Long Scenic, Megane Ph2 and Megane Ph2 Coupe-Cabriolet, contending that they do not meet the country's standard requirements and relevant technical regulations.

However, AQSIQ did not specify what safety problems it found.

The automaker's market share in the country is quite small. The Wall Street Journal reported that Renault sold fewer than 500 cars in China in the first four months of this year and fewer than 900 in 2008.

In April, Renault launched its Greater China division in Beijing, led by Chen Guozhang, former general manager of Nissan China Investment Co's import unit, to run its businesses in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao.
