Chrysler's China unit to be merged into new group with Fiat

U.S. auto maker Chrysler LLC's China unit, which has continued to operator normally, is likely to be merged into the new Chrysler Group LLC as part of the deal with Fiat SpA, the Shanghai Daily reported on Thursday.

The auto maker says it will not change its development plan for the China unit the deal with Fiat is closed, according to the report.

John Kett, vice president of Chrysler LLC and chief executive officer of Chrysler Asia Pacific, said the Chinese market is an exciting one. The automaker will offer new products to meet the demand in the country.

Chrysler will seek Chinese partners to set up joint ventures in the country as part of its long-term strategy, Kett said, adding that the company's short term plan is to focus on imports, especially imports under the Jeep brand.

The U.S.-based automaker sells Jeep SUVs, Dodge multi-purpose vehicles and Chrysler passenger cars in China.

Chrysler's annual sales hit 20,000 units in China in 2008. It only has a sales unit in the country, running businesses including brand and import management, distribution network and sales services.
