AU Optronics sees LCD panel price hike in Q3

Taiwan-based AU Optronics Corp, the world's third-largest liquid crystal display (LCD) maker by revenue predicted there will be further increase in LCD panel price in the third quarter as the industry showed signs of recovery, sources reported.

Cheng Hsuen-bin, vice chairman of AU Optronics, said that the cooperation between Taiwanese and mainland TV makers had helped the industry recover faster than other sectors.

The company's TV and PC panel shipments is estimated to slightly exceed the 50% quarterly growth forecast by the company earlier, said Chen Lai-juh. However, he noted that the company can only meet 70% of the orders from its clients due to supply constraints, especially glass substrates for TV panels.

Earlier this week, a delegation of mainland TV firms visited Taiwan with a budget of US$4.4 billion for procurement of flat panels on the island.

AU Optronics shipped more than 13.15 million units of large-sized LCD panels in the first quarter of this year, representing a quarter-to-quarter decline of 12.8%.
