Lamborghini says China will become its 2nd largest market

Automobili Lamborghini Holding SpA, an iconic sportscar maker based in Italy, expects China to overtake Italy as its second-largest market behind the U.S. within three to five years, Reuters reported on Wednesday, citing the group's CEO, Stephan Winkelman, as saying.

Lamborghini last year sold 72 cars in China, the automaker's ninth-largest market. In the same period, it sold 741 cars in the U.S. and 230 units in Italy.

Lamborghini's China sales in 2009 are expected to remain at the same level as last year despite sharp decreases in markets such as the U.S., Winkelman said.

The auto maker said Chinese consumers are eager to purchase luxury-brand products from Europe.

The automaker said it had sent managers to supervise the development of its businesses in the country.

China's passenger car sales, including minivans, sports utility vehicles (SUVs), and multipurpose vehicles, hit a record high of 812,178 units in May, up 54.7% from a year earlier, exceeding the U.S. for the fifth consecutive month, according to figures released by China Passenger Car Association,
