TCL sells 2.31 mln LCD TVs during Jan-May
TCL Group<000100>, a major Chinese television and mobile phone manufacturer, sold more than 2.31 million LCD TVs in the first five months of this year, representing a year-on-year increase of 103.7%, according to latest statistics from the company.
The sales volume of LCD TVs in the first five months accounts for nearly 60% of the company's sales in 2008, boosted by the government's subsidies offered to the rural residents to encourage spending on home appliances.
The company said it has seen steady growth in overseas markets, especially in emerging markets such as Vietnam.
In May alone, TCL sold 516,062 LCD TVs, up 92% from a year earlier, while sales volume of CRT TVs fell 63.8% year on year to 312,108 units. Sales of refrigerators rose 14.47% from a year ago to 65,394. However, sales of air-conditioners and washing machines dropped 45.72% and 35.27% to 112,444 and 17,121, respectively.
The company also sold 752,130 mobile phones during the month, representing a decrease of 23.21% from a year ago.
The company expects its LCD TV sales will continue to grow significantly for the rest of the year thanks to the government's stimulus policy and the increasing demand for upgraded products.
