The Challenge:

The New Zealand government has issued an Unsafe Goods Notice (Lead in Children's Toys) Notice 2009, banning certain children's toys having accessible parts with a lead migration level greater than 90 mg/kg, from supply indefinitely, when tested in accordance with the testing procedures and interpretation of results specified in Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS ISO 8124.3:2003 "Safety of toys, Part 3: Migration of certain elements".

This Notice will replace the 18-month temporary ban issued on September 20, 2007 with immediate effect.

The Australian Government has also issued a similar ban recently, Consumer Protection Notice 2009 No.13, imposing a permanent ban on children's toys having the same lead migration level on all accessible parts, when tested in accordance with identical testing procedures and interpretation of results as mentioned above.

Similarly, this Notice will replace the temporary emergency ban issued in September last year with immediate effect.
