The Harmonized Standards List for Toy Directive 88/378/EEC: Latest Update

| The harmonized standards list for Toys, in accordance with Directive 88/378/EEC, has recently been updated. The safety standard EN71-6:1994 - Graphical symbol for age warning labelling has been withdrawn from the harmonization list. In addition, the graphical age warning symbol requirement is now in direct compliance with EN71-1:2005+A8:2009 since the age warning symbol from EN71-6 has been incorporated into EN71-1. |
Requirements of Graphical Age Warning Symbol:
In accordance with EN71-1:2005+A8:2009, Clause 7.2 Toys not intended for children under 36 months.
The age warning shall be clearly legible at the point of sale of the product and shall appear either on the toy itself or on its packaging. The indication of the specific hazard may appear in a leaflet or in the instructions for use.
The phrase: "Warning! Not suitable for children under 36 months" or "Warning! Not suitable for children under three years" may be substituted by the graphical age warning symbol as shown in Figure 1
The details of the design shall be as follows:
- the circle and the stroke shall be red;
- the background shall be white;
- the age range and the outline of the face shall be black;
- the symbol shall have a diameter of at least 10 mm and the proportions between its different elements shall be such as those prescribed in Figure 1;
- the age range for which the toy is not suitable shall be expressed in years, i.e. 0-3.
The symbol shall be used to indicate only “0 to 3” years and not for any other age-grade warning to avoid misinterpretation of the symbol.
