Bicycles and Luggage Carriers – Publication of European Commission Decision 2011/786/EU

As previously reported in SafeGuardS No 176/11 of September 2011 a draft decision was made by the European Commission to set specific safety requirements for bicycles and luggage carriers for bicycles with a view to mandating the European standardization bodies to develop European standards based on those requirements.
The European Commission published the Decision in the Official Journal of the European Union on 2nd December 2011. This Decision 2011/786/EU is pursuant to the General Product Safety Directive 2001/95/EC and enters into force on 22nd December 2011.
The Decision has three parts:
- Part I: Section 1 of the decision sets the safety requirements applicable to all types of bicycles
- Part II: Section 2 additional safety requirements applicable to specific bicycles
- Part III: Specific safety requirements for luggage carriers for bicycles
