Pudong to Build National Digital TV Industry Park

Shanghai’s Pudong will soon have its own “digital valley” in the form of a national digital TV industry park. Construction will begin before the end of this year and the project is expected to become operational in 2010.

The park sits on a 100,000 sqm site and will be developed in four phases. When completed, it will become a digital TV industry base incorporating core technologies and service platforms for technology R&D, formulation of national testing standards, business incubation, product display, operational demonstration, human resources training besides serving as a base for headquarters of relevant enterprises.

Taking the National Digital TV Project Research Centre and the Shanghai Centre for Broadband Technology and Applied Engineering Research as its foundation and capitalising on the technological advantage of Shanghai’s High Definition Digital Technology Industrial Corporation (HDIC), the park will serve as an R&D and industrialisation base. In future, HDIC will be in charge of the research and development of digital TV core components and the integration of the industry chain, while the Shanghai Light Industrial Equipment (Group) Co Ltd will be responsible for its market-driven operations and the promotion of industrial applications. Together they will build a leading brand for Pudong’s digital TV industry.

Currently the mainland digital TV industry is worth Rmb1.5 trillion. HDIC’s single-carrier technology now leads China’s digital TV technology. When the Pudong industry park is completed, the “digital valley” will be the magnet for China’s digital TV industry, generating an annual sales turnover of Rmb5 billion and boosting the growth of a market worth at least Rmb100 billion.
