The governments of Shanghai and Jiangsu provinces have announced that Chongqi expressway is opened to traffic from Chongming Island, in Shanghai to Qidong city in Jiangsu after three years of construction, reports Xinhua.
The construction is designed to shorten the 52-kilometre route between Shanghai and Qidong by seven kilometres with driving time from Pudong to Qidong cut to one hour drive from the 2.5 hours it was before.
The length of the Chongqi expressway is 51.7 kilometres, including a 6.8-kilometre bridge over the Yangtze.
Chongqi expressway is a key part of the expressway from Shanghai to midwest China's city of Xian. The project will promote the relations between the eastern and western regions of China and the development of Yangtze River Delta.
