Taicang's cross strait cargo volume tops one million tonnes

As of December 14, 2011, eastern China's port of Taicang handled 45,000 TEU of containers, or one million tonnes of cargo, from 208 mainland-Taiwan direct shipping vessels.

The container volume was 29.4 per cent more than in the same period in 2010, while cargo tonnage was 37.2 per cent more, Xinhua reports.

Since cross-strait direct shipping was launched three years ago, Taicang has handled 709 vessels on such services with a total of 2.4 million tonnes of cargo. Taicang has become the largest port for mainland-Taiwan shipping on the Yangtze River.

As one of the first ports authorised for cross-strait direct shipping, Taicang launched first such service in December 2008 and has been offering priority and simplified 24-hour customs clearance service for cross-strait cargo.
