Introduction Wuxi Export Processing Zone (Wuxi EPZ) was given the status of a state-level development zone by the State Council in 2002. It is located in Wuxi New District in Jiangsu Province and covers an area of 2.98 sq km, of which 1.7 sq km has been developed. Wuxi EPZ is only ten minutes from the city’s downtown area, 100 km from Shanghai and 147 km from Nanjing. Wuxi Airport, only 3 km away, operates daily flights to Beijing, Guangzhou and other major Chinese cities. Shanghai Pudong International Airport, Shanghai Hongqiao Airport and Nanjing Lukou Airport are all within a two-hour drive of Wuxi.

Wuxi EPZ enjoys convenient access to transportation. The Beijing-Shanghai Highway, the Tongjiang-Sanya Highway and the Shanghai-Chengdu Highway all intersect in Wuxi, while the Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway, the Zhejiang-Shanghai-Jiangsu Expressway, State Highway 312 and State Highway 104 run directly across the city. Shanghai Port is just 165 km away; Jiangyin Port, however, is even closer at a mere 38 km away.
Investment Climate Wuxi EPZ’s major industries are information technology, optical-mechanical-electronic integration, precision machinery and new materials. In the first five months of 2008, the foreign trade value in the zone surpassed US$4.2 billion.

At the end of May 2008, the utilized FDI in Wuxi EPZ was US$2.1 billion. The zone is home to 38 enterprises, including major investors such as Hynix-ST, Jabil, Murata, Little Swan and Siemens. Hynix-ST Semiconductor, with a total investment of US$2 billion, is the largest foreign-invested project in Wuxi. The firm was jointly established by Korea-based Hynix and Italy-based ST in 2004. Production of 8-inch and 12-inch ICs began in 2007.
