What makes the British Library special? As the national library of the UK we have an unrivalled collection of approximately 150 million items (and growing all the time), encompassing 15 million books, 4 million maps, the world’s largest stamp collection, millions of newspapers, many priceless illuminated manuscripts, and such delightful treasures as the Lindisfarne Gospels, Beethoven’s tuning fork, Jane Austen’s writing desk and two original copies of the Magna Carta. Much of this imagery is available for use on licensed products, and along with the global recognition we enjoy (over 1 million Twitter followers, for instance) makes the British Library an enticing proposition for potential licensees.

As the custodians of Lewis Carroll’s original manuscript, Alice in Wonderland is very dear to our hearts. 2015 is the 150th anniversary of the original publication, and this has driven Alice to the top of our licensees’ wish-lists: we now have rugs, cushions, a deck-chair, jigsaws, notebooks, greetings cards, an umbrella, wooden postcards, poster-wrap, calendars and more. However, with our vast collection the potential beyond Alice is enormous – also very popular are maps, natural history, illuminated manuscripts, book covers and our collection of Victorian theatre posters. There are few subjects that we couldn’t cover!

Martin manages the Library’s brand licensing programme, combining this role with that of Sales Manager for the publishing team. Having been in book publishing for over thirty years with spells in Sales at, amongst others, Penguin, Bloomsbury and Reed International, the creation of the brand licensing role in 2011 has given him a chance to acquire new skills in a different sector. “The British Library, with its unrivalled collections and genuinely global brand awareness, is a licensor’s dream. The combination of a huge range of amazing images and an iconic British brand gives our licensee partners the opportunity to create wonderfully diverse and innovative products that will surprise and delight markets all over the world.”
