Born in Hong Kong, Sophia the robot was created by Dr David Hanson and his team at Hanson Robotics Limited. With Hong Kong’s talent pool and infrastructure, strengths in toy and game manufacturing, and its proximity to factories in the Chinese mainland, Hanson Robotics has chosen Hong Kong as the base to develop humanoid robots.

Sophia was designed as a charismatic robot character and an advanced platform for AI and robotics research. Utilising a combination of artificial intelligence and animation arts, she has vivid facial expressions and gestures, and can hold a natural conversation with people. She is a media darling and has spoken at hundreds of high-profile conferences, addressing the United Nations, NATO, and heads of governments and corporations.

Sophia is the first ever robot who attained citizenship and was named the Innovation Champion for United Nations Development Program in Asia Pacific. Thanks to Hong Kong’s technological prowess and visionary pioneers, the world will see ever greater benefits from advancements in artificial intelligence and robotics.
