Previously a county, Jinjiang was assigned city status in 1992. It currently administers 13 towns and six street zones, and occupies a land area of 649 square kilometres. It has a household population of 1.108 million, more than three million Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan compatriots, and a floating population of more than 1.3 million. It is therefore rightly referred to as a city of “five million Jinjiangese at home and abroad”.
Jinjiang is located on the southeastern coast of Fujian Province and only 5.3 nautical miles from Kinmen, an outlying island of Taiwan. No wonder it is the gateway for exchanges and co-operation across the Taiwan Strait.
The city has more than 16,000 enterprises, and its economic strength ranks first among Fujian’s counties for 24 consecutive years. The economic competitiveness of the county ranks 5th among the top 100 counties (cities) in the country. In 2017, the city’s GDPrecorded RMB198.15bn, representing an increase of 8.2 per cent, while total fiscal revenue stood at RMB21.223bn, an increase of 5.58 per cent.
Capital of brands
Jinjiang registered 42 well-known Chinese trademarks and earned 14 national-level titles such as “China’s Shoes Capital”, “Jacket Capital of the World”, the “National Textile Industry Base”, the “National Food Industry Stronghold County”, “China’s Umbrella Capital” and the “National Packaging and Printing Base”.
The Jinjiang Board
There are a total of 46 listed companies in Jinjiang, which ranks first among all counties (cities, districts) in the country. There are also 51 reserve-listed companies and 78 companies listed on the “New Third Board”, the Tianjin StockExchange and the Haixia Equity Exchange.
China’s umbrella capital
There are more than 300 manufacturing enterprises in Jinjiang, with 50,000 employees in total. In 2016, total output value reached RMB10.232bn and total exportvalue recorded RMB2.95bn. The city’s annual output andexport volume were among the highest in the country, and production of all-weatherumbrellas accounted for one-third of the country’s total output. Finished umbrellaexports accounted for a 38-per-cent share of the national total, and occupies a major market share in the US, Japan, the UK and Russia. Jinjiang is also the country’s largest production and distribution centre for
finished umbrellas and umbrella materials and accessories.
Among the top national brands, Jinjiang products account for four, namely Susino, Fulong, Yusimeng and Rain Bird. Susino is also recognised as a famous export brand. Moreover, Susino umbrellas, Fulong’s Jinou umbrellas, Yusimeng umbrellas, Rain Bird’s Yuzhongniao umbrellas, along with Fuyong umbrellas and Jicheng light industrial products, are six Jinjiang’s products that have been listed among China’s well-known trademarks.
