Power Port

As one of the most important ports on the Chinese mainland and one strengthened by a developed trading infrastructure, Ningbo is well positioned to become a key manufacturer and supplier for global markets

Ideally situated on the southern flank of the Yangtze River Delta, bordering Shanghai and Hangzhou, Ningbo covers an area of 9,365 square kilometres and has a population of some 5.76 million people.

Ningbo is one of the cities opening up to the outside world, an independently-planning-city enjoying the same rights as a provincial government in terms of economic management, “a large city” entitled to formulate local laws and regulations, and a famous historic city with rich cultural heritages.

The city was the birthplace of the Neolithic Hemudu culture that dates back more than 7,000 years, and became one of the three ports for foreign trade in China as early as the seventh century.

Ningbo is one of the most important ports in China, handling 15.67 million TEUs of cargo throughput in 2012. The cargo throughput of Ningbo-Zhoushan port amounted to 0.453 billion tons by the end of 2012. In 2012, Ningbo’s import and export trade volume reached US$96.57 billion, with export trade totaling US$61.45 billion and import trade reaching US$35.13 billion.

With its rapid development in transport networks, Ningbo is the transportation hub of Eastern Zhejiang Province. The inauguration of the Hangzhou Bay Bridge has dramatically shortened travel time between Ningbo and Shanghai to two hours. Bus routes also include Shanghai-Hangzhou-Ningbo Expressway, Ningbo-Taizhou-Wenzhou Expressway, Ningbo-Jinhua Expressway, Ningbo-Zhoushan Expressway and the Ningbo Ring Expressway.

The new Ningbo-Taizhou-Wenzhou high-speed railway and Xiaoshan-Ningbo railway connect Ningbo with Shanghai and shorten the journey from Ningbo to Hangzhou to 40 minutes and 1.5 hours from Ningbo to Shanghai.

The city’s transport links also include Ningbo Lishe International Airport with about 10 minutes’ drive distance to Ningbo Downtown, which connects the city to Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Tianjin, Chongqing, Chengdu, Xi’an, Wuhan, Shenyang, Dalian, Qingdao, Xiamen, Fuzhou, Harbin, Zhengzhou, Ji’nan, Changsha, Nanchang, Taiyuan, Urumqi, Kunming, Nanning, Guiyang, Haikou, Sanya, Shantou in Mainland China, and overseas countries and regions such as Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Korea and Singapore.

Excellent Brands

Ningbo Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Bureau is the municipal administration department for foreign trade, foreign investment and economic cooperation. Thirty years since the opening of the Chinese mainland, Ningbo has evolved to be a famous port and a renowned brand-name city. Key industries cluster that form the bases of the city’s brand-name export trade, which includes:

• Textiles and garments
• Home electrical appliances
• Auto parts
• Stationeries
• Lighting
• Bearings
• Lighters

These brand-name export enterprises, though not on the same scale as gigantic entities such as Haier, are suitably sized to maximise the compatibility and economic efficiency that helps increase their market share. Items such as Dunhuang thread, Beifa writing instruments, Great Wall measuring tape, Pairdeer batteries, Rhymes music boxes and Haitian injection moulding machines are all top sellers in China and enjoy good reputation and market share on the international stage.

Ningbo is sharpening its competitive edge with brand-building, brand-name products and a brand-name strategy. This all-star line-up will ensure that Ningbo’s brand names will soon become the most sought-after items in the international showcase.
