Various kinds of product such as pineapple leaf fibre leather have been available in the market. Plant-based vegan leather leaves less carbon footprint than genuine leather, but polyurethane (PU) or Polyvinylchloride (PVC) is needed to be added to ensure good leather properties. The use of such non-biodegradable and petro-based chemicals will create sustainability issues. Besides, plant growth takes time and requires larger piece of land. The cultivation of bacterial cellulose is easier and faster than plant growth and stock breeding. The source of bacterial cellulose can be originated from fermented kombucha drink. <h1 style="background:white;">Nu-Torque Yarn</h1> Nu-Torque yarn technology allows the production of torque free singles ring yarns by a single step on a ring spinning machine.Nu-Torque cotton yarns and fabrics have good soft handle and improved fabric surface appearance, higher yarn tenacity at lower twist levels, lower residual torque and lower hairiness, and yarn novel effects, in addition to low knitted fabric spirality after washing. In the finer cotton yarn sector, the technology can provide much thinner and lighter fabrics produced by the finer yarns whose linear densities are reduced by half. With unique wool like softness of fabric made from Nu-Torque cotton yarns, this technology will help cotton to be better applied and to compete with fibers like wool and other man-made fibers in the areas of shirts, polo shirts, pants and sweaters. However, the current technology is difficult to manufacture finer yarn counts, even at 30Ne.This project is intended to further develop the technology for mass production of finer Nu-Torque cotton yarns for weaving and knitting. The target yarn counts are 30Ne and 40Ne. AI-Powered Smart Garment Sorting System for RecyclingThis smart, automated sorting system provides an effective and efficient solution to sort reusable and resalable postconsumer garments by using artificial intelligence and image analysis. The integrated system comprises four highly customisable AI-backed modules connected by a conveyor path with robotic arms to identify garment type, fabric structure, material composition and colour. The four modules can be operated as stand-alone units or arranged in different order to carry out specific sorting tasks and business operations. In terms of performance, the fabric structure module operates at 95% accuracy while other modules operate at over 90% accuracy. This system is able to sort bulk garments effectively and generates a full set of results in eight seconds, eliminating most manpower requirements and minimising hygiene concerns.
