<div>The world’s largest gifts and premium trade fair - the Hong Kong Gifts &amp; Premium Fair, organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), successfully concluded on Tuesday at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Also drawn to a successful close was the concurrently ran Hong Kong International Printing and Packaging Fair held at the AsiaWorld-Expo. The four-day fairs welcomed over 62,000 buyers, up almost 7% compared to the previous year.</div><div> </div><div>The two fairs had attracted close to 4,500 exhibitors from 37 countries and regions and over 62,000 buyers from approximately 140 countries and regions to come; with buyers from emerging markets recorded double-digit growth. For the Gift Fair, emerging market buyers rose 12%, with the Chinese mainland up 18%, India 25%, the Philippines 18% and Thailand 32%. For the Printing and Packaging Fair, emerging market buyers likewise recorded a significant growth of 17%, with the Chinese mainland up 24%, Thailand 42% and Vietnam 41%.</div><div> </div><div>Emerging markets have thrown up lots of business opportunities in recent years. HKTDC has been encouraging Hong Kong companies to expand into the emerging markets to open up more business opportunities and diversify risks. At this year’s Gift Fair and Printing and Packaging Fair, HKTDC had invited 164 buying missions to come, bringing many quality buyers from the emerging markets to the shows, such as Malaysia’s Freemori Bakery, Thailand’s The Mall Group and Puri Company Limited, Russia’s LeFutur and UAE’s Fakih Group, etc. There were also buyers from traditional markets, including Australia’s Outback Spectacular and Oxford Communications Group and USA’s Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art. In order to accommodate the prevailing “small-yet-frequent” sourcing trend, a Small-Order Zone was set up at the Gift Fair, with over 320 showcases offering a variety of products available for small orders. The Zone attracted around 22,000 buyer visits during the four-day fair period, generated over 26,000 business enquiries.</div><div> </div><div><strong>The best platform for launching new products and expanding customer base</strong><br />The world’s largest Gift Fair entered its 28th edition this year. Some exhibitors have indicated that the Gift Fair has become their ideal platform for launching new products and showcasing new designs to global buyers.</div><div> </div><div>Local designer Florence Wong of ZAN’S, a Hong Kong company that specialises in creative gifts and home accessories, launched the Papa Say Yes series of home accessories at the Gift Fair. The series was inspired by the father’s moustache and includes the patented “Sink Stopper with Strainer Combo” – one side of it stops water from draining while the other side’s sieve stops food waste from washing down the sink. Wong said that aside from the Papa Say Yes series that will soon be launched in Hong Kong, she also showed some of their upcoming designs to select buyers. She said she received many enquiries from European and US buyers.</div><div> </div><div>The Panda-a-Panda illustration series, created by renowned local illustrator Siu Hak, has been a big hit in Hong Kong. Kelvin Chan, General Manager of the Panda-a-Panda company, attributed the series’ popularity to its Asian graphical style, which has helped attract the attention and enquiry of many Asian buyers. They have in particular received more enquiries from Chinese mainland buyers this year; and have released new products at the Fair. “We are launching the Panda-a-Panda travel series at the Gift Fair, which includes luggage straps, luggage tags, passport holders and multi-purpose travel kits. There are also products redesigned with new Panda-a-Panda images. One third of the enquiries we received came from Chinese mainland buyers”, Chan said.</div><div> </div><div>Hip Shing Poly-Bag Industrial Ltd considered the Printing and Packaging Fair to be an ideal platform to make new business connections. After exhibiting last year, they received approximately HK$500,000 worth of new orders. This year they showcased two new packaging products, and received enquiries from Southeast Asian buyers from Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, etc.</div><div> </div><div><strong>Gift Fair exhibitors successfully found distributors, welcomed emerging market buyers</strong><br />Kilovest, which specialises in silicone, eco-friendly fashion accessories, serves clients mostly from conventional markets like the EU and Japan. SiliBAG is one of its most popular series. At the Gift Fair, Managing Director Sam Yeung enthusiastically promoted their SiliBOW, a colourful silicone bowtie packaged in a martini glass. The product readily got the attention of Italian distributor Sodini, which quickly signed on as a distributor. Yeung said he was approached by many large-scale local retailers as well, and would be discussing cooperation details after the Fair. He was very optimistic about sales prospects.</div><div> </div><div>English fashion accessories manufacturer Alchemy 1977 has been coming to the Fair for 14 years. The company specialises in stylish, rock and roll themed accessories such as bracelets, necklaces and rings, etc., which are distributed to 58 countries. Its Director of Sales Marnie Rudkin-Boam said that the weak European economy has caused many buyers to reduce their order quantities. The Gift Fair allows her to meet many buyers that she would normally not come across. This year she met buyers from Morocco’s Marrakesh and from emerging markets like Dubai and Russia; which was a pleasant surprise. These buyers expressed their wishes for custom-made and tailor-made accessories.</div><div> </div><div><strong>Buyers loved smartphone accessories, IT products and eco-friendly packaging solutions</strong><br />Some emerging market buyers said they could always find creative and high-quality new products at the Gift Fair. First-time Gift Fair attendee Russia’s Novozhilova Maria runs a gift wholesale and import business. Her company LEFUTURE operates 25 shops in Russia, with the intention of expanding to 50 within this year. Maria said Russia was fortunate to not have been affected by the negative European and US economic conditions. At the Fair, a number of stylishly designed and competitively priced multi-function gadgets and smartphone accessories caught her attention.</div><div> </div><div>Suwipha Wannamanomai, Merchandising Director of Thailand’s Siam Specialty Co. Ltd, said their company has started out as a shopping mall developer. Now they own the megamall the Siam Discovery Mall, and have brought Japan’s Loft to Thailand. She said that although Thailand was hit by natural disasters earlier, their business was not affected, and is even recording an annual growth of 10-20%. She said, “Our customers love IT accessories, high-end stationery and products that tickle them with a twist. At the Gift Fair I have found many good value-for-money IT products and beautifully designed items. Exhibitors also offer flexible MOQs, which makes it easy for me to place orders.”</div><div> </div><div>Australia’s Oxford Communications Group has come to the Printing and Packaging Fair for the first time to source eco-friendly materials, including fiberboards and recycled papers. They have already found two potential suppliers that could provide the materials they need. They were satisfied with the Fair.</div>

The popular Panda-a-Panda illustration series has launched it new travel series at the Gift Fair, with also products that are redesigned with new Panda-a-Panda images.

Kilovest, which specialises in silicone, eco-friendly fashion accessories, promoted their SiliBOW, a colourful silicone bowtie packaged in a martini glass at the Gift Fair. The product readily got the attention of Italian distributor Sodini, which quickly signed on as a distributor.

Marnie Rudkin-Boam, the Director of Sales of a English fashion accessories manufacturer Alchemy 1977 was happy to meet buyers from Morocco’s Marrakesh and from emerging markets like Dubai and Russia at this year Gift Fair.

Exhibitors with “Green Solutions Suppliers” and the Green Printing and Packaging Solution Display Area showcased a wide range of environmentally friendly products, such as FSC paper, recycled paper, bio-degradable materials, sustainable printing and packaging materials and solutions.
