Steven is a Partner of MinterEllison LLP and has practiced in Hong Kong for almost 25 years. Steven represent clients from various business sectors including clothing manufacturers and brand licensees, banks, retail brands, household electrical appliance designers and manufacturers, and other participants in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector. He also assists law firms and trade mark and patent agents with IP registrations, commercial agreements and disputes matters for their international clients, which include many household names. Steven is a Council member and former President (2005-2007) of the Hong Kong Institute of Trade Mark Practitioners, Council member of the Intellectual Property Committee of the Law Society of Hong Kong, and Member and Subcommittee member of the International Trademark Association (INTA), Asian Patent Attorneys Association (APAA), as well as being a Notary Public. Through his engagement with the above bodies, he has been involved in several government consultations and lobbies for changes in the law. Steven has been consistently recognised for IP work by his peers in international published rankings, including being recognised by Asia Pacific Legal 500 as a Leading Lawyer in the area of Intellectual Property 2001-2019.

Dr. Albert Wai-Kit Chan is Partner at the Law Offices of Albert Wai-Kit Chan, PLLC. Dr. Chan handles all areas of intellectual property law (including technology transfer, patents, trademarks, copyrights, business transactions, and trade secrets), and his specialty is biotechnology patents. He is well-versed in all aspects of prosecution and litigation and is experienced in licensing, technology transfer and the evaluation of intellectual property portfolios.

From 1996 through 2013, Dr. Chan taught as an adjunct professor of law at The City University of New York School of Law. His classes included intellectual property law, patent law, technology transfer, Internet and the law, food and drug law, and international business law. He is currently adjunct associate professor in the School of Life Sciences at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and has adjunct professorship in the Department of Health Technology and Informatics at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Dr. Chan is active in a number of legal organizations including, among others, United States-China Intellectual Property Institute, Inc. (a New York Not-For-Profit Corporation) where he is founder and director.

Dr. Chan received his J.D. degree from Columbia University School of Law in New York. He was awarded his Ph.D. in virology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and he completed his postdoctoral training at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York as an American Cancer Society postdoctoral fellow.

Daniel started off his career as a programmer at Hutchsion Mobile Data in 1990 and had launched CompuServe HK even before the internet boom. Since Hutchison, Daniel had been a business development professional in telecom and internet businesses in Asia Pacific and had been spearheading some corporate startup ventures at Taiwan Mobile. During the dotcom era, he became a resident-entrepreneur at a venture capital backed incubator iWorldGroup based in Malta. He later emigrated to Canada after 9/11 and started up his own brick and mortar toy store. He sold the toy business in 2008 and joined a Canadian toy manufacturer and has started to involve in invention, licensing and product innovations.

Daniel is currently a co-owner and CEO of Remotec and has successfully transformed Remotec to become profitable, IP-driven with a strong focus in platform business. As an inventor himself, he led Remotec’s IP acquisition strategy, product development and sales operation. With a rich background in telco, he is the mastermind in developing AIRXED’s value proposition. Having setup businesses in Singapore, Indonesia and Philippines before, Daniel is keen to develop a sustainable business roadmap in Asia Pacific for AIRXED. AIRXED was officially shortlisted as Top100 finalist for both HKSTP’s Elevator Pitch in 2019 and Singapore Slingshot 2019 competitions.

Daniel is currently active in Smart City Consortium, HKETA and TEN as council members. Daniel received his Computer Science degree from Deakin University in 1989 and 3 Master degrees (M. Res, MBA , M.IT) and a PhD in Marketing. Daniel is defending his PhD proposal at Universiti Sains Malaysia.

Winston is a long-term strategic advisor to e-Commerce companies in the region and board member of Arizon RFID, a world leading RFID tag and supply chain data management companies globally. Winston was most recently President International at JD.com responsible for global strategic and business initiatives as well as international investments and M&A. Winston was a member of the Group Investment Committee and represented JD on the boards of Go Jek (Indonesia), Tiki (Vietnam) , JD Central (Thailand) and represented as the proxy board member for JD on board of Farfetch. Winston led the Farfetch investment which led to US$1 Billion gain for JD.com. Prior to joining JD.com, Winston was SVP and Head of Global Corporate Finance & Development and Vice Chairman of Investment Committee for LeEco Holdings and served on the board of Hong Kong listed TCL Multimedia.

Before joining the technology industry, Winston was an investment banker for 20 years. Winston was the Head of Asia Technology, Media and Telecom investment banking at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Prior to joining Bank of America Merrill Lynch in September 2013, Winston was Managing Director and Head of Asia Ex-Japan Technology Group and was also Head of Asia ex-Japan Consumer Retail investment banking at Goldman Sachs. Winston worked at Goldman Sachs for 7 years. Prior to that, Winston worked for over 10 years at Citi which he joined via Salomon Brothers in 1996. He has worked in New York, Palo Alto and Hong Kong during his 20 years in investment banking. Winston is a frequent speaker at major industry conferences including World Economic Forum at Davos and Future Investment Initiative (“Davos in the Desert”) and has appeared on global media outlets such as CNBC, Bloomberg, CNN, Fox News to share his business and investment views.

Dr Shuyu Chen received his B.S. in physics from Zhejiang University in 2006 and Ph.D. in nano science and technology from HKUST in 2011. He was a visiting scientist at Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research Germany during 2017-2018. His research is in the area of soft condensed matter theory and advanced functional materials. In 2014, Dr Chen founded Acoustic Metamaterials Group (AMG) which is the world’s technical leader in metamaterials. AMG has been pioneering the development of the core technology, including broadband spectrum customization, low cost mass customization production (MCP), etc. and the IP strategy for commercializing metamaterials. In 2017, the team built up the world’s first industrial scale noise control solution using mass produced acoustic metamaterials in Hong Kong. Dr Chen and his team won several awards including the Gold Medal with the Congratulations of Jury of the 45th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva, Dr William Mong Best Research Award in Nano Science and Technology HKUST, 2019 Hong Kong Awards for Industries: Technological Achievement Certificate of Merit, etc.

Between 1996 and 2014, Jun served as Corporate Counsel, Associate General Counsel, Vice President of Intel Corp, Managing Director of Intel China. He played a vital role in building up Intel’s presence in China, landing Intel’s multi-billion-dollar projects in major cities, setting up the related operating structure and policy framework, and supporting key trade negotiations, investment and competition strategy, etc.

AJun holds a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from Northwestern School of Law, Lewis and Clark College. He received his MBA from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and LL.B. from East China University of Politics and Law. Dr. Arno Hold is the Executive Director of AIPPI, leading the General Secretariat of the Association in Zurich.

Before joining AIPPI, he was the Dean of External Relations and Lecturer on International Trade at University of St. Gallen, Switzerland. Prior to that, he held Fellow and Senior Consultant positions with the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), the University of Hong Kong and the World Trade Institute in Bern leading several large international projects on innovation, IP and international trade.

Arno regularly obtained expert mandates to provide IP policy advice and to implement large IP capacity building projects across the globe. When he was a Project Director and Coordinator of the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property (IPI), he had overall responsibility for bilateral IP technical assistance programmes and represented Switzerland in various multilateral organizations on initiatives to further promote and harmonize international IP protection.

Dr Hold received his Ph.D. from the Swiss Institute for International Economics and Applied Economic Research at University of St.Gallen with a thesis on the relationship between IP protection and economic development (under the supervision of WIPO’s Chief Economist Carsten Fink). He is a graduate of the World Trade Institute’s Master of International Law and Economics Programme (MILE) and completed a master’s degree in Political Science at the Universities of Bern, Bologna and Zurich.

Dan is qualified as a Patent Attorney in the UK and Europe and holds a Master of Science degree in Physics from the University of Bristol, UK.

Dan has almost 20 years of experience where he been advising on the protection of inventions and designs, prosecution of intellectual property rights and infringement and validity of intellectual property rights since 2000.

Dan specialises in advising on international filing strategies, which is backed up by a career spanning a European firm, a Chinese firm and the in-house department of a US company, where he personally drafted responses to office actions at the EPO, SIPO and USPTO. He is particularly strong experience in drafting patents –he has drafted over 200 patent applications, most of which were for technology companies and universities, with particular expertise in computer networks, wireless communications, computer software and photonics. He also has experience on carrying out freedom to operate searches for two multinational companies with R&D operations in Hong Kong

Prior to joining Deacons, Dan worked as the lead European and Asian in-house patent counsel for a US multinational where he managed the Asian and European patent filings and strategy, had full responsibility for invention disclosure review and patent portfolio management for several business units and drafted patent applications relating to networking, photonics and computer software.

Prior to that he worked at a leading firm of Patent and Trademark Attorneys in Hong Kong and at one of the largest firms of Patent and Trademark Attorneys in the UK, where he focused on patent drafting, UK and EP prosecution. He also spent three months on secondment to a leading Chinese Patent Agency in 2003, where he learnt about Chinese Patent Law and took part in a high profile Invalidation Action at the Patent Re-examination Board of SIPO.

Dan has experience in a broad range of technologies in the IT space including enterprise networking, WLAN, Internet of Things, servers, enterprise storage systems, system architecture, security, cloud computing, software, electronics, photonics, medical devices, power tools and household domestic products. His practice includes the drafting and prosecution of patent applications, advising in relation to validity and infringement and advising on international filing strategies.

Mr Konno began his career as an IT network and database engineer at CSK (now SCSK).

Charmaine obtained a B.Sc. degree in Biology from the University of Toronto, followed by a Bachelor of Law degree from Queen’s University. She then went on to obtain a Masters in Law from University of Cambridge and a Certificate in Intellectual Property Law and Practice from University of Bristol.

Charmaine advises on all aspects of commercial IP, including the structure and documentation of complex commercial transactions, licensing, franchising, distribution, cobranding as well as IT, technology, media, entertainment and advertising agreements. She also has extensive experience advising on copyright, data protection and personal data privacy. Charmaine represents many of the world’s leading brands, advertising agencies, entertainment businesses, ISPs and content providers in relation to a wide range of innovative IP or internet issues.

Charmaine’s practice covers all aspects of IP work including anti-counterfeiting strategies and enforcement of IP rights. She advises on complex IP enforcement advice, litigation and arbitration. She has won a number of high profile court cases resulting in ground-breaking decisions in the Hong Kong IP field.

Mr. Kwong is a Chartered Arbitrator and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb London), a WIPO appointed Neutral and Domain Name Panelist and Panelist for the Legal Rights Objections (LRO) under ICANN’s New gTLD Program, Centre for Efficient Dispute Resolution (CEDR) Accredited Mediator, a Notary Public and a solicitor of Hong Kong, Australia (Victoria), England and Singapore. He is on the Panel of Arbitrators for Intellectual Property and Adjudicators, and Listed Arbitrator of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC).

He was a member of the Hong Kong Government Advisory Committee on Patent System Reform and Convenor of its Working Group on Interim Measures, member of the Working Group on Intellectual Property Trading and Convenor of its sub-group on IP Arbitration and Mediation. He is also a member of the Steering Committee on Mediation, Chairman of its Accreditation Sub-Committee, member of the Regulatory Framework Sub-Committee and Vice-Chairperson of the Special Committee on Evaluative Mediation set up by the Department of Justice. He is a director of Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI). He proposed the idea of legislative guidance on arbitrability of IP rights which is accepted by the Government and now provided for in the Arbitration (Amendment) Ordinance 2017.

Mr. Kwong was Deputy Chairman of the Copyright Tribunal, member of the Administrative Appeals Board, Member of the Panel of the Inland Revenue Board of Review, Member of Steering Committee on Review of IP Issues in the Innovation & Technologies Sector. Dr Patrick Lau is Deputy Executive Director of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC). In this role, Dr Lau helps create opportunities and facilitates deals for Hong Kong businesses. Prior to joining the HKTDC in 2019, Dr Lau was the CEO of a digital infrastructure company, Director of Investments at the Malaysian Government's sovereign wealth fund Khazanah Nasional, and Board Director and Investment Committee Member of venture and private equity fund Xeraya Capital. After obtaining his LLM from the Cambridge University in 1997, Mr Ling commenced full practice as a barrister in Hong Kong in 1998. He joined Des Voeux Chambers in 1999. He practises exclusively in the civil and commercial fields.

Mr Ling undertakes a wide variety of work involving company law, insolvency, trusts, land, disciplinary proceedings, contractual and commercial disputes. He makes regular appearances at all levels of the Hong Kong Courts, in arbitrations and before various specialist tribunals.

Mr Ling specialises and is well-known in the field of intellectual property, including patent litigation and arbitration. He is described as ““a highly visible presence in intellectual property matters … a bright junior with an intellect that can easily deal with complicated work” (Chambers & Partners Asia-Pacific 2009) and “a seasoned pro in IP, particularly trademark, disputes.” (World Trademark Review 2018).

Before returning to Hong Kong in 2000, Dr. Lui lived in Singapore for 13 years and was a member of the Technology and Market Intelligence Committee of the National Science and Technology Board that advised on the development of Singapore’s intellectual property strategy and framework in the 1990s. Jackie is also President of a group of IP firms having offices in Hong Kong, China, and Macau. Her experience includes drafting and prosecuting patent cases worldwide for multinational firms, publicly listed companies and startup companies in Singapore, Hong Kong, Europe and North America. Since her return to Hong Kong more than 15 years ago, she has advised universities, research institutes, listed companies and startup companies in Hong Kong including the ASTRI and NAMI.

Mr. Tong has a substantial litigation practice in different areas of intellectual property in both Hong Kong and China and extensive experience in managing and maintaining worldwide trade mark portfolios for international and local companies in various fields of industries. In addition, Mr. Tong has also overseen and supervised quite a number of trade mark, copyright and patent litigations in China, the US, Europe and Australia. Furthermore, Mr. Tong has been appointed by the HKIPD as a trainer for their IP Manager Training Program since 2016 and has delivered seminars on copyright and design rights protection and exploitation to more than 1,000 delegates. Mr. Tong is a member of the Technical Advisory Committee of the Hong Kong Brand Development Council. Mr. Tong is at the same time the Honorary Legal Adviser of the Design Council of Hong Kong, under the auspices of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries. He is a Fellow and council member of the Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators, a Notary Public and a PRC Appointed Attesting Officer.

Beyond intellectual property related matters, Janet is involved in a variety of civil disputes and litigations with a particular focus on intellectual property, commercial and corporate matters. She helps clients in freezing and recovering assets in fraud and commercial dispute cases. Janet is fluent in English, Cantonese and Mandarin.

Janet has been an active member of INTA (International Trademark Association) since 2014. She is also a Council Member of Licensing Executives Society China, Hong Kong Sub-Chapter (2019-2020).

Before joining HKSTP, Dr. Xu was the Director of Technology Transfer Center and Chief Executive Officer of HKUST R and D Corporation Limited at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology responsible for the University’s intellectual property management, patent portfolio development & licensing, academic-industrial collaboration, technology commercialisation and technology startup incubation, management of funding schemes supporting technology transfer and entrepreneurship. Prior to that, she worked for leading consulting firm McKinsey & Company Hong Kong, specialising in energy, chemicals and petrochemicals, and Bechtel Asia Pacific, focusing on the planning and development of large-scale infrastructure projects. As the head of Shiyuan’s legal and intellectual property (IP) teams, Ms Zhuang is responsible for the setting up of internal control procedures and compliance systems required of a listed company. She is also in charge of investment, financing, mergers and acquisition as well as corporate IP management.
