Various kinds of product such as pineapple leaf fibre leather have been available in the market. Plant-based vegan leather leaves less carbon footprint than genuine leather, but polyurethane (PU) or Polyvinylchloride (PVC) is needed to be added to ensure good leather properties. The use of such non-biodegradable and petro-based chemicals will create sustainability issues. Besides, plant growth takes time and requires larger piece of land. However, the current technology is difficult to manufacture finer yarn counts, even at 30Ne.This project is intended to further develop the technology for mass production of finer Nu-Torque cotton yarns for weaving and knitting. New Functional Textiles from Bio-based and Degradable Fibres PHBV/PLA fibres are 100% bio-based and bio-degradable. It is able to utilise a low temperature dyeing process with disperse dyes to achieve high dye uptake. It delivers good colour fastness with a 32% energy saving compared to conventional methods of dyeing PET material. The textiles have outstanding natural anti-bacterial and mite-resistant properties without using any additional chemicals. Green MachineA hydrothermal treatment method to separate and recycle cotton-polyester blended textiles Garments are often made from a blend of different fibres in order to improve fit, style, comfort and longevity. As yet no commercially viable separation and recycling technologies are available in the industry for the most popular blends such as cotton and polyester blends. Therefore, these materials have turned into textile waste in landfills.In order to cope with this kind of blended textile waste, we have developed The Green Machine. It is an efficient hydrothermal treatment method to decompose cotton into cellulose powders, hence enabling the separation of the polyester fibres from the blends.The separation process uses only heat, water and less than 15% of green chemical with a recovery rate of over 97% for polyester fibres in 2 hours.
