<div>Four fairs organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) – Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Autumn Edition), Eco Expo Asia, Hong Kong International Building and Decoration Materials &amp; Hardware Fair and Sports Source Asia – came to a successful close today. A total of 2,956 exhibitors from 41 countries and regions and nearly 70,000 buyers from around 150 countries and regions attended the fairs. Buyer attendance is up 8% over last year. Most of these buyers came from the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, USA, Australia and Germany. </div><div> </div><div>“The four fairs recorded a significant increase in the number of buyers,” HKTDC Deputy Executive Director Benjamin Chau said. “Buyers from mature markets, including the USA, Canada and certain European countries such as France and Spain have risen significantly. For emerging markets such as Malaysia, Brazil, Turkey, Indonesia and Israel, buyer attendance even recorded double-digit growth. This reveals that the global buying sentiment is turning positive, and that the four fairs are key sourcing platforms for respective industries.”</div><div> </div><div>“Global exhibitors leveraged the platforms of October fairs to unveil all kinds of energy-saving, high-tech products so as to generate business contacts and open up new markets.</div><div> </div><div>HKTDC organised 187 buying missions consisting of major importers, distributors and retailers from around the world to the fairs to explore business opportunities. These include Home Depot from the USA, LG Innotek from Korea, Panasonic and NEC from Hong Kong, Spot-On Laser &amp; Tool Company P/L from Australia, and Top League Ltd. from Russia, and so on. Apart from overseas buyers, local lighting retailers, property developers, property management companies, governmental departments and statutory organizations, hotels, and so on also sent representatives to attend.</div><div> </div><div>HKTDC was recently awarded the UFI Marketing Award 2013, recognising its Small-Order Zone’s effectiveness in connecting global suppliers and buyers. The Small-Order Zone at the Lighting Fair (Autumn Edition) welcomed over 8,000 buyers during the four-day fair period, generating over 12,000 business connections. Khiesz Attila, a Vodafone partner that operates nine retail shops in Hungary, thought highly of the small order concept. The company purchased nearly USD76,000 worth of mobile phone holders and cases from six suppliers at the Small-Order Zone. Abed Alfattah Khader, General Manager of Jordan’s Orient Palace For Lighting, said small orders were conducive to generating business. They ordered 2,000 lighting accessories and light bulbs on the first day of the fair.</div><div> </div><div><strong>Exhibitors leverage the fairs to debut products and expand the customer base</strong><br />Many exhibitors capitalised on the opportunities to launch new products at the fairs. Hong Kong’s local brand, MEGAMAN, has always been a pioneer in energy-efficient lighting solution and has been attending the Lighting Fair for many years.  Matthew Chu, General Manager of the company said the brand has launched over 100 new designs this year. He said, “The Lighting Fair is an ideal platform for us to promote our products. We ride on this platform to unveil gain more exposure for our brand-new Incanda-LED series which delivers brilliant sparkling light effect.” Chu added that the fair helps MEGAMAN reach many potential customers. He expected this year’s participation would bring orders double that of last year.</div><div> </div><div>Hong Kong exhibitor GS Garden’s GS Planter self-watering product is capable of retaining water and delivering self watering plants once in two weeks. Its products can water the plants in different phases. The product was very well received by the buyers at Eco Expo Asia. Karen Fung, Marketing Assistant said, “Our staff have been overwhelmed with buyers’ enquiries, some of the buyers even bought the planter right away. We have to restock our products to meet the demand on the Public Day (31 October).”</div><div> </div><div>Sports Source Asia exhibitor Mark Glory Industrial Ltd. has been expanding their business beyond Hong Kong in recent years. Their sportswear and compression wear are being sold in Australia and Italy. Siu-Cheung Yick, Director of the company recognized that the fair buyers came from different parts of the world, presenting an opportunity for overseas expansion. They met buyers from South Korea, Germany, Mexico, and so on, at the fair, and conduct fruitful discussion for future cooperation. </div><div> </div><div><strong>Enormous market potential for green products</strong><br />Green products are certainly one of the leading market trends. Hong Kong exhibitor Nokero participated in the fair for the first time and launched solar powered LED lamp at the fair. The product stores solar energy collected during the day for illumination at night. Not only is the product eco-friendly, it also helps provide lighting for places where the electricity supply is unstable or insufficient. The company’s products are currently sold to markets including Kenya, India and Haiti. The founder and technical director Steve Katseros said, “The buying atmosphere is good at the fair. We have met many buyers in just a few days. The fair helps us further expand to the Southeast Asian markets.”</div><div> </div><div>Polish buyer Marcin Sobelewski came to Hong Kong solely for the Lighting Fair and Eco Expo Asia. He said, “European consumers are increasingly concerned about products’ eco-friendliness. I am looking for some innovative, energy-efficient products here at the fairs. Both fairs have given me diverse choices for sourcing.”</div><div> </div><div><strong>An assembly of innovative and high-tech products</strong><br />Some of the industry’s most innovative products are showcased at the fairs. Japan’s Chuwa Industrial Co., Ltd. debuted their small, smokeless incinerator F-1S at Eco Expo Asia in Hong Kong. Its Hong Kong and China distributor Patricia Pan said, “We have arranged a number of onsite demonstrations at the fair to show how tyre and PET plastics can be incinerated without producing smoke. The demonstrations attracted many buyers.”</div><div> </div><div>Geartec Limited, a first-time exhibitor of the Hong Kong International Building and Decoration Materials &amp; Hardware Fair, brought their I-CON smart LED glass to the fair. The product can instantly switch from hazy to transparent effect, and can be connected to a computer to serve as a touchscreen. Samuel Choi, Sales Manager of the company said, “Many visitors including designers, developers, building contractors and property management companies are very interested in our products. A lot of follow-up discussions and quotations will be conducted after the fair.”</div><div> </div><div><strong>Good buying atmosphere at the fair</strong><br />Celso Antonio, Director of Brazil’s Luxion Iluminacao Ind. E Com, visited the Lighting Fair (Autumn Edition) for the first time. The company provides lighting solutions to many residential and commercial projects. It is also the lighting supplier for Brazil’s BMW stores, and hotels including Accor, Ibis and Novotel. Celso said the main purpose of the trip was to look for LED accessories. “The fair is nicely organised and the exhibitors’ products are of high quality. Ihave already met many potential suppliers on the first day of the fair.”</div><div> </div>

Eco Expo Asia was open to public for free admission today. A number of green workshops , such as the twig art workshop , were organised by the HKTDC..

Invented by the teachers and students of Department of Applied Science of the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Sha Tin), the Sustainable Farming-Aquaponics system uses Blackwater gadfly larvae to decompose food waste, which is turned into nutrient supply for plants and aquatic animals. Carmen Wong Pui-yan (centre), Lecturer of the department said, “We have successfully demonstrated our research result to the visitors at the Eco Expo Asia  and have achieved our goal of delivering public education.”

Polish buyer Marcin Sobelewski came to Hong Kong solely for the Lighting Fair and Eco Expo Asia. He said, “I am looking for some innovative, energy-efficient products at the fairs. Both fairs have given me diverse choices forsourcing.”
