<div>More than 64,000 buyers from 141 countries and regions attended the HKTDC Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Autumn Edition), Eco Expo Asia, HKTDC Hong Kong International Buiding and Decoration Materials &amp; Hardware Fair and Sports Source Asia.</div><div> </div><div>As they came to a close on 30 October, the events organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) had welcomed 14 per cent more buyers than the previous year.  The most significant increase in buyer numbers was from emerging markets including Iran, Thailand, India, Ukraine, Russia, the Czech Republic and the Chinese mainland. The four fairs also attracted some 2,850 exhibitors from 38 countries and regions.</div><div> </div><div>To create more business opportunities for exhibitors, the HKTDC organised 180 buying missions featuring major importers, distributors and retailers from all over the world. Among the companies represented were Hitachi East Asia Ltd, EG Light and Neon-EC from Russia, Domoz Sp. z o.o. from Poland, Sofit from Ukraine, Bashiti Stores for General Supplies from Jordan, and Framework Building Products Pte Ltd from Singapore.</div><div> </div><div><strong>New Product Launches</strong><br />The four fairs put green and new technology products in the spotlight, with eco-friendly household products meant to encourage a low-carbon lifestyle. Among the new eco-tech products launched at the events were water activated batteries, fitness bicycles that convert kinetic energy into electricity and energy-saving lamps with body temperature sensors to automatically switch them on or off in kitchen cabinets. Other items of note were bamboo wall decorations and flooring, as well as a carpet dry cleaning solution made from natural ingredients.</div><div> </div><div>Eco Expo Asia alone welcomed more than 3,500 buyers from emerging markets – a substantial 37 per cent increase over the previous year. The HKTDC noted that buyer numbers from ASEAN countries increased significantly, in part due to rapid economic growth and increasing awareness of environmental protection in the region. And as ASEAN countries emerge as the world’s factories, there is strong demand for energy, with crude oil consumption in ASEAN countries reportedly increasing by 4 per cent annually, higher than the world’s average growth rate of 1.8 per cent.</div><div> </div><div><strong>Green Business Opportunities</strong><br />Autumn Lighting Fair exhibitor <a href="http://www.hktdc.com/fair/exdetail/hklightingfairae-en/1X6BNPLC/HKTDC-Hong-Kong-International-Lighting-Fair-Autumn-Edition/Neo-Neon-Enterprises-Limited.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Neo-Neon Enterprises Ltd</a>, a specialist manufacturer of LED lighting products, has found that carbon-reducing, energy-saving products have become a focus.</div><div> </div><div>Neo-Neon’s General Manager Lawrence Chan said as incandescent lamps are phased out and consumers switch to LED products, the company saw heavy traffic at the autumn event.</div><div> </div><div>“We have received more enquiries from India, the Middle East and Australia,” said Mr Chan. “The Australian government started to levy a carbon tax, while electricity tariffs are extremely high in India. Buyers from these countries are therefore eager to look for LED products to save energy and reduce electricity consumption, creating a lot of business opportunities for our company.” Mr Chan said market potential in emerging markets such as India and the Middle East “should not be overlooked given their rocketing economic development in recent years.”</div><div> </div><div>Another company specialising in eco-friendly lighting products is <a href="http://www.hktdc.com/fair/exdetail/hklightingfairae-en/1X6BRY06/HKTDC-Hong-Kong-International-Lighting-Fair-Autumn-Edition/Comet-International-Corp.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Comet International Corp. The </a>Taiwanese exhibitor won Best Eco Design Award at the first Hong Kong International Lighting Products Award, and exports mainly to Europe, the US and Japan. Comet International also has customers from emerging markets such as India and those in Central America and South America – including Brazil, Chile and Mexico.</div><div> </div><div>“For exhibitors like us, this fair is not just a platform for sourcing and business negotiations, but also an effective channel to promote new products to buyers from every corner of the world,” said Tony Lu, Comet International’s general manager.</div><div> </div><div>Eco Expo Asia proved to be an important platform for first-time exhibitor <a href="http://www.hktdc.com/fair/exdetail/ecoexpoasia-en/1X6C2PKD/Eco-Expo-Asia-International-Trade-Fair-on-Environmental-Protection/Zero-Waste-Energy.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Zero Waste Energy</a>. Company CEO Eric Herbert said he met with government departments and influential business leaders at the event, giving him an opportunity to introduce his green technologies and products to growing markets.</div><div> </div><div>Macau exhibitor <a href="http://www.hktdc.com/fair/exdetail/ecoexpoasia-tc/1X6C2936/%E5%9C%8B%E9%9A%9B%E7%92%B0%E4%BF%9D%E5%8D%9A%E8%A6%BD/Carpet-Cleaner-Dry-Cleaning-Systems-Limited.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mayor Pure Asia</a> was also at Eco Expo Asia, showcasing a carpet cleaning solution made from wood and corn-based granules. Jörg-Michael Reuther, Mayor Pure Asia’s CEO, said the company took orders for its systems from the second day of the fair.</div><div> </div><div><strong>Overseas Springboard</strong><br /><a href="http://www.hktdc.com/fair/exdetail/ecoexpoasia-en/1X6C2SF9/Eco-Expo-Asia-International-Trade-Fair-on-Environmental-Protection/Guangdong-Mingjie-Environmental-Protection-Science-Technology-Co-Ltd.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Guangdong Winner Environmental Protection Science and Technology Co Ltd</a> was formed under a parent company engaged in the recovery, processing and reuse of renewable materials as well as the investment and management of renewable resources industries. Deputy General Manager Jason Mo said the company has participated in Eco Expo Asia for several years because they could meet more buyers from Europe and the US than they could at similar events held on the mainland. “For mainland environmental protection enterprises wanting to develop overseas markets, Eco Expo Asia definitely helps them to achieve that objective,” said Mr Mo.  </div><div> </div><div>Li Renyue, deputy general manager of <a href="http://www.hktdc.com/fair/exdetail/ecoexpoasia-en/1X6BQ14T/Eco-Expo-Asia-International-Trade-Fair-on-Environmental-Protection/Zhongshan-Weifeng-Electrical-Co-Ltd.htm">Zhongshan Wei Feng Electrical Co, Ltd</a>, said Eco Expo Asia offered a great launching pad for new products and promotion of new technology. The first-time exhibitor offers household heat-recovery water heaters designed to retain energy and reduce waste by directing low-temperature water for use in flushing. Mr Li said overseas buyers were very interested in the technology and he received many enquiries, so the company is making plans to exhibit at the fair again next year.</div><div> </div><div><strong>Small-Order Zone</strong><br />The HKTDC has also been offering business matching services at all its trade fairs, as well as a new feature to meet sourcing needs of a wider range of buyers. The new Small-Order Zone was set up at the HKTDC at the Autumn Lighting Fair, and featured more than 1,000 high-quality products from more than 200 suppliers. The zone drew more than 12,000 buyer visits, and generated about 8,000 business enquiries.</div><div> </div><div>Canadian buyer Peter Richardson said the Small-Order Zone shorted his sourcing time. “In the past, we ordered large quantities which required us to spend more time on finding suitable suppliers, conducting several rounds of in-depth negotiations with potential suppliers and even visiting their factories on the Chinese mainland to check their production quality so as to reduce sourcing risks,” he said.</div><div> </div><div>“If suppliers are willing to accept smaller orders, we can place a trial order for smaller quantities, allowing us to evaluate the products and service quality offered by suppliers and to test market responses. By doing so, we can shorten our sourcing time, enabling us to respond more quickly to rapid-changing market needs.”</div>
